Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an AI assisted travel routing system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 10th, 2024, published on January 21st, 2025, and assigned serial number 12203766.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford is leaning heavily into artificial intelligence these days, as is the case with a lot of companies that view such technology as the future. This has shown up in some recent patents including filings for ideas like a navigation prediction vehicle assistant, as well as a system designed to influence electrified vehicle charging decisions. Now, this newly published patent keeps the trend going with another interesting idea – this time, for an AI assisted travel routing system that may be used in future Ford EVs, specifically.
The goal of this particular idea is pretty simple – to improve the efficiency of future Ford EVs by providing owners with optimized route planning, which in this case would be determined by artificial intelligence. The concept of using smart navigation to plan trips with charging stops factored in is nothing new – and mostly works quite well – but this concept aims to improve it further, all by taking into account a variety of factors.
Those could include things like predicted and actual traffic congestion, a vehicle’s energy usage and charging times, charger station data, weather conditions, police report data such as accidents, the locations of special events that may be taking place, and road conditions, including repairs and other factors that could play into efficiency and drive times. Using that data, this system would determine the best and most efficient route that an EV driver could take and automatically guide them there, all while using the power of artificial intelligence in a way that could save us time and money, if it does in fact come to fruition.
Comments
“A smarter way to cut down on travel time and improve efficiency.” That is how it is being sold. In reality, it is going to take you down the “scenic” route past a bunch of restaurants during lunchtime to entice you to stop for a bite because they will sell the algorithm to the highest marketing bidder. You’ll pay for the convenience of being suckered into another data mining marketing scam. Ford wins both ways, and you’ll get bent over both ways.
Sounds like you really enjoy technology. Good thing nobody asked you
