Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an air compressor control system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on July 27th, 2023, published on January 30th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0035104.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford published a patent outlining an idea for an on board air compressor back in August 2023, which seems to indicate that Ford is thinking about offering an air compressor directly from the factory for a wide variety of models, both pure ICE and even hybrids. That air compressor would utilize exhaust gases to provide compressed air via a pair of pistons – one of which moves in response to spent exhaust gases, while the other piston compresses the air on demand. That compressed air would be stored in a tank, so that it’s ready to go whenever the user needs it. Now, this newly filed patent introduces us to an idea for an air compressor control system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
With air compressors becoming more and more common as factory-installed accessories in newer off-road-focused vehicles, this new patent proposes doing precisely the same thing in the form of an air compressor and a tank. However, it would also utilize a sensor that could automatically detect what type of tool it’s connected to, and then calculate a specific air pressure based on the tool’s capabilities and potential use.
This is key given the fact that air compressors can be used for all sorts of things – whether that be to inflate something like basketball, a mattress, or a vehicle’s tire. If it comes to fruition, this system could help make inflating various things a bit easier, at the very least.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
