Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a system that would guide individuals to an electrical power outlet that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on September 28th, 2022, published on January 21st, 2025, and assigned serial number 12202406.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford launched its new Pro Power Onboard feature years ago, but it certainly isn’t finished trying to innovate in that particular space. Rather, The Blue Oval has published a number of patents exploring different ways to provide portable power to the masses in recent months, including ideas for interchangeable AC outlets, a vehicle connectivity system for enhancing power tool operation, and base plates with power outlets. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for a system that would guide individuals to an electrical power outlet that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

As Ford notes in this patent, vehicles are gaining all sorts of power outlets these days, ones that are located in various places around those vehicles – both inside and out. However, it believes that in many cases, owners experience troubles in terms of accessing or using those outlets, and as such, proposes this particular system, which aims to help guide them to those outlets.

In this case, the system would be capable of determining when a user is looking for a power outlet to use in a vehicle, at which point it could determine which is the most convenient outlet for them to use based on a variety of factors. Once the system makes that determination, it would guide the user to that outlet in one of several ways – whether that be via an audible beep, by illuminating the power outlet, through an audible or graphical instruction via something like the navigation system, or even a text message. It’s a pretty simple idea really, but one that could prove useful and potentially help save owners some time and frustration if it comes to fruition.
