Future Ford Vehicles Could Transmit Emergency Alerts When Parked

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a system that could transmit emergency alerts when parked that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on July 24th, 2023, published on January 30th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0037564.

The Ford Authority Take

Connected vehicle technology has become increasingly prevalent – and capable – in recent years, which has resulted in a whole new world of features and capabilities. Regardless, Ford continues to look to innovate in that space, recently filing patents for ideas such as an ice and snow warning system, as well as an unknown cargo detection and evidence collection system that could warn the driver that illegal drugs are present in a vehicle. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for a system that could transmit emergency alerts when a vehicle is parked that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

For many years, emergency broadcast systems have existed to warn us of dangerous situations. In the U.S., the Emergency Alert System (EAS) does precisely that in a number of ways including on the television and radio, but when we’re traveling in vehicles, we typically rely on the latter. However, there are times when users may not get these alerts for any number of reasons, and that’s precisely where this system would come in.

The idea here is to equip future Ford vehicles with a radio receiver that’s configured to receive emergency alert messages, though when that isn’t the case, it would remain dormant. However, when the user is in the vehicle or near it, the system would also be able to generate a signal warning the user that an emergency exists – which could prove quite handy in many cases, if this concept does indeed come to fruition.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
