Each year, Consumer Reports asks its members to disclose any problems they’ve experienced with their vehicles over the past 12 months, which provides a considerable amount of data on both new and used models in that regard. In its latest study, the consumer organization focused specifically on five- to ten-year-old used vehicles, or those from the 2015-2020 model years, using a survey sample of 150,000 vehicles and 20 problem areas. When all of that data was crunched, it revealed that Lincoln ranked average among all automotive brands in that regard.
The winter version of Consumer Reports‘ 2024 Used Vehicle Reliability Study ranked Lincoln 13th among 26 brands with a score of 43 out of 100 possible points – placing it behind Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Acura, Buick, Volvo, Nissan, Subaru, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW, as well as ahead of Audi, Tesla, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Ram, Ford, Kia, GMC, Hyundai, Mini, Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler.
To calculate these scores, CR compares the number of problems each specific model experiences to the average number of problems for all vehicles from each particular model year. It looks at a variety of trouble areas ranging from minor annoyances like squeaky brakes and broken trim to more serious issues such as engine and transmission repairs, or EV battery replacement and charging woes. From there, it weighs each problem based on its severity to calculate an overall reliability score. In this case, overall reliability rankings are derived from the six aforementioned model years to come up with a singular brand score.
In the prior version of this same study, Lincoln also ranked average for the 2014 to 2019 model years, as it finished 13th out of 26 total automotive brands with a score of 42, while Ford landed down a bit further in 20th place with a score of 36. However, it’s worth noting that this data applies to entire lineups, and results do vary greatly by model. In fact, the 2020 Lincoln Nautilus was just named as one of CR‘s most reliable five-year-old SUVs/crossovers.
