Though it hasn’t been treated to a full-blown refresh since it debuted for the 2021 model year, the Ford Mustang Mach-E continues to receive various updates with each passing model year. That’s particularly true of the 2025 Mach-E, which is getting a new standard heat pump (which makes the frunk a bit smaller), the new Sport Appearance Package, a relocated shifter, three new exterior colors, and various other tweaks. Now, the Mach-E’s chief rival – the Tesla Model Y – has received its very first refresh, one that contains quite a few notable updates.
The refreshed Tesla Model Y was just unveiled for China, specifically, which was previously the case with the updated Model 3 before it launched in other markets, including the U.S. However, it looks a bit different than the 3, interestingly enough, sporting more of a Cybertruck-like lighting element up front, coupled with a restyled front fascia and a new front camera – coupled with a full-width light bar out back.
Like the Model 3, the refreshed Y has received a new steering wheel design inside the cabin, while its steering column stalks are seemingly gone. Tesla says that the new Model Y uses acoustic glass to cut down on interior noise, and there’s a new screen for rear seat passengers, just like the 3. Other notable cabin updates include a new ambient lighting LED strip across the dash, as well as power rear seats that give owners easier access to the rear cargo area.
In terms of range, the refreshed Tesla Model Y is rated to travel up to 719 kilometers (446 miles) in Long Range all-wheel drive form with 19-inch wheels, though that’s based on the more generous CLTC estimates. That same model can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds, which is quicker than the current model’s 4.9 clicks. For now at least, there is no Performance model offered for sale, though one should join the lineup soon. The updated Model Y will arrive in China first as a launch edition model, with a starting MSRP of 263,500 yuan, ($35,900 USD), but we should see it show up in other markets in the coming months as well.
Comment
The Model Y may have many technical advantages over the Mach-E, but the Mach-E is a much better EV overall.
