YouTuber’s 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty Is Actually OK: Video

Recently, YouTuber John Ross of the channel WatchJRGo began experiencing a loud ticking noise coming from the 6.7L V8 Power Stroke diesel in his 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty, which has around 35k miles on the clock. This caused quite a bit of concern, as one might imagine, even though ticking noises are quite common in modern engines that utilize things like direct injection systems. Regardless, Ross took his Ford F-250 Super Duty to the dealer to have them check it out – along with fix a problem with one of its massaging seats – and it seems as if everything is fine, after all.

At first, the dealer told Ross that they were unable to replicate the ticking noise, which only seemed to occur once the truck was warmed up and idling. This caused a bit of frustration for Ross, given the fact that his mind had already settled on the worst-case scenario that he might need an engine replacement. Making matters worse, Ford issued a recall for select 2020-2020 Super Duty trucks just a few weeks ago, which addresses high pressure fuel pump failures caused by biodiesel deposits that can form on the pump drivetrain roller components. However, his truck’s VIN wasn’t among those listed in the recall.

The dealer spend some time with the Ford F-250 Super Duty, driving it around until it got up to temp, and it was eventually able to replicate the off-rhythm ticking noise, though the truck wasn’t throwing any error codes or warning lights. The dealer inspected fluids and ultimately determined that this is a normal engine noise, though that’s not the end of the story.

Rather, there is a Special Service Message (SSM) 51251 that pertains to ticking noises in 2011-2022 Super Duty diesel pickups that occur following oil changes. It typically sounds a lot like a typewriter once the engine warms up, but according to Ford, it isn’t detrimental to the engine’s function, nor does it cause any short- or long-term negative effects. Regardless, this was the first time Ross had heard that particular noise coming from his truck, which is what caused his concern in the first place.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
