While several Blue Oval models have performed well in recent crash testing performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), that hasn’t necessarily been the case for the Ford Expedition. Rather, the large SUV earned a marginal rating in the agency’s updated overlap front testing last year, placing it behind its rivals, the Jeep Wagoneer – which earned a score of “good” – as well as the Chevy Tahoe, which was rated as average in that regard. Now, the 2023-2024 Ford Expedition has scored precisely the same on the updated version of the IIHS front crash testing, too.
IIHS recently subjected 30 different models to this particular test, and out of that group, 22 managed to earn a good or acceptable rating. However, the Ford Expedition wasn’t among that group, as it finished with a score of “marginal,” which was better than just seven other models in the test. To earn a good or acceptable rating, a vehicle’s systems must be able to prevent or substantially mitigate crashes at higher speeds.
The updated version of this test includes trial runs at 31, 37, and 43 miles-per-hour – higher than the older test’s speeds of 12 and 25 mph – and examines performance with a motorcycle target and a semitrailer in addition to a passenger car. The concept is to test a vehicle’s forward collision warning and automatic braking capabilities, and as far as the Ford Expedition goes, it failed to produce a timely warning in several tests involving a passenger car, motorcycle, and semitrailer, though it did avoid an accident in each case, regardless.
This particular performance is a bit of an outlier compared to what we’ve seen from a few other Blue Oval models as of late, however. In fact, the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 just earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick Award, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E managed to bring home Top Safety Pick+ Award this time around – the highest honor bestowed on vehicles by the IIHS. The Ford Bronco Sport, on the other hand, missed out on one of these accolades after securing a Top Safety Pick+ Award previously.
