Bill Ford Says Trump Tariffs Need To Be Predictable

Since taking office last month, President Donald Trump has imposed an additional tariff of 10 percent on goods imported from China, and soon, they’ll be joined by 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum and reciprocal levies as well. For now at least, proposed 25 percent tariffs on imported items from Canada and Mexico are on hold, but Trump recently revealed that he plans on implementing a universal automotive tariff in early April. Ford CEO Jim Farley has spoken out on the topic of tariffs on several occasions as of late, and now, he’s being joined by Executive Chairman Bill Ford.

“We can adjust to almost anything, as long as we know what that path is,” Ford said at the Crain’s Detroit Business Newsmakers of the Year event, according to Automotive News. “What’s really hard for us, the whole industry, is to get start-stop, start-stop with policy changes all the time. I think this administration is acutely aware that it’s important to have a very vibrant American industrial base. But they have to be aware of the implications of some of the decisions, and we’re in the process of having those discussions, and I feel very good about it, frankly.”

Ford CEO Jim Farley was seemingly concerned about Trump’s proposed tariffs early on, warning that such actions could cause “a lot of chaos,” especially if such levies were imposed on Mexico, where the automaker builds a trio of models currently that are sold in the U.S. Farley said that such tariffs could “blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we’ve never seen,” in fact.

However, after visiting Capitol Hill recently, Farley changed his tune, publicly supporting Trump’s move to place tariffs on all imported automobiles rather than ones coming from specific countries. “We applaud President Trump’s idea to look at all vehicle imports to the U.S., an important step forward,” Farley said. “Comprehensive trade policies are imperative to achieving the president’s vision to strengthen the U.S. auto industry.”

  3. Trump is imposing the tariffs so he can fill the treasury. That will allow him to reduce taxes on his rich friends. Could Bill Ford be one of them? Hmmm.

  4. Bill, have you read any of Bob Woodward’s books on Trump? Unpredictable is who he is. When one doesn’t have clue as to what he’s doing, unpredictability is the best cover. Hey, but what most voted for…correct? Elon Musk said best in one of his interviews when he said, “most people didn’t know what they were voting for”.
