Chris Mies Gets Behind The Wheel of Supercars Ford Mustang: Video

Chris Mies is no stranger to the absolute power and thrill offered up by Ford Mustang based race cars. He was one of the drivers who helped pilot the No. 65 Mustang GT3 to the GTD Pro class win in the 2025 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, but he couldn’t get his fill of the pony car on track. Mies is a huge Australian Supercars fan, so series legend Dick Johnson and Ford Performance teamed up to get Mies behind the wheel of a Supercars spec Mustang, catching him completely by surprise.

Video still of the Supercars Ford Mustang at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Driver Chris Mies took a spin in the pony car based racer.

Johnson arranged for a Supercars Ford Mustang to be hidden out of Mies’ sight in the infield of Charlotte Motor Speedway, tricking the young driver into thinking he was attending a media day event rather than an on-track test. His “interview” was interrupted by an overenthusiastic Mustang revving up and doing donuts. Johnson himself pulls up and puts Mies through a short test to determine whether or not he’s worthy of getting behind the wheel.

The pop quiz doesn’t quite fall in Mies’ favor, but no matter – Johnson turns him loose in the Supercars Ford Mustang anyway. Steering wheel securely attached, Mies throws the pony car racer around the Charlotte “Roval,” putting the racer through its paces on the infield road course as they go for a spirited gallop. Mies is all smiles behind his helmet, thrilled with the way the race car handles.

“It’s amazing,” he says. “It’s just about driving. There’s no driver aids… touch the brakes the first time, you feel it in your chest.”

That’s a high compliment coming from someone who drives the Ford Mustang GT3 for a living. Mies remarks that he’s excited about having the chance to drive the Supercars Mustang again sometime in the future, and thanks Johnson and Ford Performance for giving him the chance. And who knows – maybe one day Mies’ name will be on the leaderboard at Bathurst.
