Ford Backed Group Wants Trump To Revive EV Charger Program

Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump has enacted a series of policy changes, reversing many of his predecessor Joe Biden’s EV-related policies in the process – such as nullifying an executive order issued by Biden in 2021 that sought to ensure that half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. were all-electric by 2030, and it also put a halt to distributing unspent funds from vehicle charging stations. Trump has also moved to nix the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which is something a Ford-backed group is now asking the President to reconsider.

“Investments in charging and refueling stations are creating jobs and expanding consumers’ transportation choices in every state,” Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) President Genevieve Cullen said in a statement. “The NEVI program, created in bipartisan legislation, is an effective and important element of a truly strategic energy policy that promotes US innovation, domestic investment and energy security. We urge the Administration to quickly resume the critical work of the program and minimize uncertainty for states and their businesses, who have invested in infrastructure to serve local and national goals for advanced transportation.”

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program previously earmarked $5 billion for the installation of new EV chargers across the U.S., though only a little more than 100 were built in the U.S. since it was originally enacted. Under Trump, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has ordered states to stop plans related to the program, while the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) also instructed states to decertify plans that dictate where and how those charging stations would be built, as well as what companies are contracted to do that work.

The memo containing these instructions notes that the Trump Administration plans to write new guidance for the program, which will then be open to public comment. However, some believe that the order isn’t legal, so it may also face challenges in court. In the meantime, the administration is considering addition actions aimed at the automotive industry, and may also terminate the contract between Oshkosh Defense and USPS for all-electric mail carriers.

  4. Being an E/V owner of a Mach E, I have and still want to know why in three years, only 100 were actually created. I also want to know why if these are taxpayer funded, then why do I also have to pay again to use the equipment I already helped pay for. Charging is not inexpensive at these charging stations so tell me where the profit goes and why taxpayers are paying for companies to make money off those then charging from their stations.

  7. The largest charging infrastructure is owned by Tesla. So Musk stands to make the most money from puppet Trump’s cancellation of the bipartisan Congress approved charger funding. This will only hurt the US and put us further behind other countries.

  9. Henry Ford helped promote the gas powered Model T with his money . If Ford Motor Co. and General Motors want to Promote and sell Electric Powered vehicles from China ; they should get the money from China to install the Electric Charging Stations. Otherwise Ford & GM should build those electric charging stations , themselves . Put up or Shut Up ! The Biden Administration is Out of Business !

  10. We actually have plenty of charging stations, despite the pro-oil press complaining. What we need is for the USA auto companies to start building affordable EVs for everybody. You know, like the ones the rest of the world can buy, but all we get are excuses.

  11. The tax payers should not foot the bill for ev stations. They pay road taxes for diesel and gas, then are expected to subsidize ev infrastructure?
