Ford CEO Jim Farley Supports Trump Automotive Tariff Strategy

To date, Ford CEO Jim Farley has presented us with some mixed reactions pertaining to proposed and actual tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on goods imported from other countries. After stating that he believes Trump should slap tariffs on countries like Japan and South Korea in addition to China, Mexico, and Canada, Farley noted that tariffs, in general, are causing “chaos” in the automotive industry, adding that if levies against Mexico are ultimately imposed, it would prove “devastating” and “blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we’ve never seen.” Now, Farley is supporting Trump’s broader auto tariff strategy, it seems,

“We applaud President Trump’s idea to look at all vehicle imports to the U.S., an important step forward,” Farley wrote in a recent post on X. “Comprehensive trade policies are imperative to achieving the president’s vision to strengthen the U.S. auto industry.”

Thus far, Trump has imposed tariffs of 10 percent on Chinese goods and 25 percent on imported steel and aluminum, all while pushing back 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico as the sides continue to negotiate. Farley previously stated that most of the steel and aluminum that Ford uses currently is sourced domestically, though some of its suppliers get those same materials from other countries, which could have an impact on costs. Currently, the automaker builds the Lincoln Nautilus and imports it into the U.S., too.

Farley did visit Capitol Hill just last week to discuss tariffs with the Trump administration, and while he didn’t reveal any specific details as to what transpired, the exec did say that those meetings were “productive” and that the automaker “shares and appreciates President Trump’s vision to build a thriving and innovative U.S. auto industry that creates American jobs.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  3. Reciprocal tariffs make the most sense at this point in time. If we cannot sell our products in other countries because of the tariffs imposed on our products by those countries, then we need to apply the same tariffs to products from those same countries. Ultimately, in a free market world, there would be no tariffs at all and the only way to get there is by doing exactly what Trump is proposing. The US has the largest market on earth and if you want to sell your stuff here we have every right to demand equal treatment.

  4. Who cares what Jim has to say anymore? He’s off spouting about EVs, again, one minute, and something pro or con tariff-wise the next. Same goes for Mary. Tired of both of them. Please shut your pieholes!

  6. Jim, you may want to rethink this change in philosophy. Remember that Ford is a large exporter of all things automotive as well, so your foreign market sales numbers are really going to take a hit. Remember, it’s a world market, and tariffs will only convolute this long growing aspect of trade.

  8. Farley sounds like he’s now got a lot of money and has changed forgetting that Tarrifs can cause a Tariff war, with every country raising Tariffs higher & higher till the consumers, US, no longer can afford the products from any Country including ours and if high Tariffs are put against us, the companies here will have to keep the prices here in our Country the same prices in the other countries that put Tariffs on them, to keep up the demand for their products and again with Trump’s unethical, mindless policies we the consumer will lose again while the rich like Trump & Musk get richer, maybe that’s one of Trump’s plans, because he’s already shown he cares NOTHING about the American People and feeds them Lies, to get what he wants! So if Farley feels that way, then my 65 years of buying Ford vehicles is over! Our Country is NOT suppose to be made up of Lies, greed & power, but today our Country is off on the wrong foot!

    1. Jim Farly opinion is very important when it comes to tariffs and trade. On the one hand we have to understand why Ford and every other major US manufacturer had major investments in EV’s. The previous administration forced EV’s on Ford and had speeches pushing higher corporate taxes. Why would any business gain investors when you would lose your investment with such hostile leadership? There has got to be hope that if you invest in America you are going to get something back.

  9. One reason you do not see American cars in Thailand is the import duties. Not only American but most imports will be slapped with fees and taxes over 300% on the invoice and freight costs! So there are several foreign car and motorcycle factories in Thailand.
