Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Ford RS500” and “RS500” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Ford Authority has learned.
Filed on February 14th, 2025, under serial numbers 99041813 and 99041867, these applications contain the goods and services description of “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”
The Ford Authority Take
Back in March 2024, The Blue Oval filed to trademark “Ford RS200” and “RS200” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which was big news given the fact that the RS200 is an iconic machine originally conceived as a homologation special so that FoMoCo could go Group B rally racing. The automaker later trademarked RS200 in Switzerland, and just this past June, Boreham Motorworks announced a new licensing agreement with Ford that will enable it to build continuation versions of the RS200. Now, The Blue Oval has filed to trademark “Ford RS500” and “RS500” in the U.S.
The Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth is yet another legend in the automotive world, a high-performance, homologated rally machine that was produced in scant quantities and is a highly coveted and pricey collectible today. The hand-assembled model was famous largely for its turbocharged 2.0L powerplant designed by Cosworth, along with its beefier brakes, slick bodywork, and what is a rather unique rear spoiler.
Today, that model is worth a considerable amount of money, as one might expect, but it’s possible that these trademark filings aren’t intended to mark a revival of that vehicle by Ford itself. Rather, as Ford Authority reported last August, Auto Vision Club is working on a redesigned version of the RS500 dubbed the Carbon Piranha, which is based on a real Sierra RS500 Cosworth, yet updated in numerous ways. However, it’s currently unclear if the Ford RS500 name is being revived specifically for that use, or perhaps something else entirely.
