Future Ford EVs May Be Warned About Objects Near Chargers

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a charger object warning system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on June 2nd, 2022, published on February 11th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12223727.

The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, Ford has filed a handful of patents aimed at innovating in the space of EV chargers, which include ideas for things like a charger success monitoring system, a system providing real-time third party charger info, and charger reservation capability. Now, this newly published patent keeps the trend going by presenting us with another new idea, this time, for a charger object warning system that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.

With the number of EVs on roads expected to continue to grow in the coming years, there will certainly be a need for more chargers, and that’s precisely why a number of companies are building new ones on a regular basis. Current tech already enables users to find EV charging stations along a route and even view things like pricing and available chargers, but as this patent points out, there are times when this data may not account for certain things.

For example, it’s possible that a vehicle may be in an EV charger stall – or another object altogether, whether that be a cone because the charger isn’t operational, or any number of other objects that may render that charger unusable. As such, this system would be able to use a variety of sensors to identify the presence of objects, and then communicate that information with EVs – a potentially useful idea, if it ever comes to fruition.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

  1. When will the Maverick EV come out. Its all I care about. First quarter in 26?
If its at or below 40K, I will be in line with a reservation. First Ford I will ever own. Please don’t make me go to a dealer. Your dealers are the worst human beings.
