Second Generation Ford EVs, EREVs At Least Two Years Away: Report

After investing heavily in all-electric vehicles over the past few years, Ford shifted gears recently amid an ever-changing market, and is instead gravitating more toward hybrids, extended-range EVs (EREV), and smaller, cheaper EVs, in general. As one might imagine, developing those new vehicles will take some time, and in fact, The Blue Oval plans to offer a hybrid powertrain across its entire Ford Blue ICE lineup by 2030 – which is still a few years away. As it turns out, we’ll likely be waiting a while for the automaker’s second-generation EVs and brand new EREVs, too.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Ford’s new/lower-cost EVs and EREVs aren’t expected to arrive until 2027, in fact. In the meantime, the automaker plans on adding new features to its existing all-electric vehicles to keep them competitive, such as the Rally version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, as well as a newly standard heat pump that debuted across that same lineup for 2025. “We are always looking for improvements and getting unnecessary costs out,” said Marin Gjaja, head of Ford Model e. “The rate of competitive change means we can’t sit still, we’ve got to keep grinding on this.”

Meanwhile, The Blue Oval has adjusted its production target for the second-generation Ford F-150 EV following softening demand for the existing Ford F-150 Lightning. Ford plans to build less than 100,000 units of that model annually at the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center when it comes online in 2027, compared to the 300,000 that it originally intended to produce there. The next-generation EV pickup was also originally expected to enter production in 2025, but that date was later pushed back to 2027.

As for Ford’s desire to build and sell extended-range EVs, that’s a fairly new development that started with some cryptic comments from CEO Jim Farley last year, who later acknowledged that such models have a lot of appeal at the moment. A recent report indicates that the automaker plans to add an EREV option to the Ford Super Duty lineup, along with more than one crossover and/or SUV, too.

  1. I owe a EREV sedan and if Ford doesn’t produce a sedan, I will not buy from Ford. Not everybody likes SUV’s or crossovers or is willing to buy one no matter what.

  2. for the right price, i would LOVE to trade in my ram for a ford f150 lighting. What is that price….long range battery (in any trim) for $55k (MSRP folks).

Do this, and i would buy TODAY.

  3. If Lightning didn’t look like a 2015 F150 and instead looked like the 2025, include the interior, I would buy one. Probably a Platinum too.
