Supercars Ford Teams Start 2025 Strong By Sweeping Round 1 Podium

The podium at the opening round of the Australian Supercars Championship at the Sydney 500 on February 21st, 2025 was dominated by Blue Ovals. Seizing on a Chevy’s misfortune, three Ford teams surged to claim the top three spots when the checkered flag dropped.

The charge was lead by Cam Waters, driver of the No. 6 Ford Mustang GT, who started on the pole and held control of the 26-lap event right from the get-go. Not only did he absolutely dominate the race, he set the fastest lap in the field and proved that his Supercars Ford was the one to beat by dashing across the line almost 17 seconds ahead of the second-place No. 25 Mustang of Chaz Mostert and the third-place Thomas Randle in the No. 55 Mustang.

The Blue Oval’s dominance was bolstered by Matt Payne, who posted a fourth-place finish in his No. 19 Mustang. The highest-finishing Chevy was the No. 1 Chevy Camaro of Will Brown, although his finish was bookended with yet another Supercars Ford driver rounding out the top five as Brodie Kostecki brought his No. 38 Mustang home in fifth.

“That’s absolutely awesome, I knew we had a fast race car in qualifying, and I was pretty happy when we won the start,” Waters said after the race. “It was so fast out there, so massive thank you to the whole team. Wow, how different this is from 12 months ago when we had wheels falling off and I was crook. so I couldn’t be happier.”

He added, “The morale at [Supercars Ford team] Tickford is so good at the moment, we didn’t really lose anyone in the off season which was great, and Tommy [Randle] and I work so well together, and we know we’ve fast cars, so we’re all pretty pumped.”

Broc Feeney, driver of the No. 88 Camaro, looked to be a strong contender for the top spot, but his race car suffered a tire puncture on Lap 12, allowing the Supercars Ford teams to dash away with control of the race.
