While the Ford F-Series duo – consisting of the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty – has remained the best-selling truck in America for decades to this point, The Blue Oval also doesn’t break out the sales of those two models individually. As such, while we know that Ford F-150 is easily one of the most popular vehicles in the U.S. overall, we have to rely on third-party data to see just how it fares in that regard. In that realm, the F-150 has actually long ranked as the best-selling individual vehicle in the U.S., but in 2024, it seems to have lost that title to the Toyota RAV4.

According to Felipe Munoz of JATO Dynamics, the Toyota RAV4 took home the title of best-selling individual vehicle in the U.S. last year after racking up 475,193 sales, beating out the Ford F-150, which came in second after moving 460,915 units. According to Munoz, this is the first time in many years that the Ford F-150 hasn’t topped the American new vehicle sales charts, amazingly enough. Even more interesting is the fact that the current-generation Toyota RAV4 debuted back in 2018, meaning that it’s a bit long in the tooth compared to the F-150, which received its last redesign in 2021 and a refresh in 2024.
In any event, the Ford F-150 remains an incredibly popular vehicle not only in the U.S., but also, other parts of the world where it’s sold. As for the Ford F-Series, it was once again America’s best-selling truck – this time, for the 48th year in a row – not to mention America’s best-selling vehicle (with the aforementioned asterisk) for the 43rd consecutive year – after posting a year-over-year sales increase of 0.76 percent to reach 732,139 units. The overall U.S. new car market performed quite well also, totaling 16.09 million passenger cars and light trucks, a three percent increase and its highest volume since the pandemic.
Update: After publication, Ford sent us a statement about F-Series sales in 2024:
All Ford F-Series trucks, from F-150 to F-600, share a common cab architecture from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. We offer multiple ICE, EV and hybrid powertrains, frames and exterior style choices depending on trim series and work needs. Other vehicles, like Toyota RAV4 or Porsche 911, also offer multiple powertrains, driveline options, engines, chassis and styling choices for their customers, depending on customer needs and use. Here’s an image to illustrate the common cab architecture across all Ford F-Series Trucks:

I would believe that the Rav4 would eventually dethrone the F-150. For one thing Toyota’s are popular. The Rav4 is a smaller vehicle than the F-150 more affordable and with the new hybrid gets better mpgs. High prices for full size trucks, higher interest rates, and for many harder to get loans has affected the sales of full size trucks for GM, Ford, Ram, and Toyota. There is only so long the period of a loan can be extended with 96 months becoming more typical. I don’t see any 120 month loans in the near future.
Way less blue blooded Coller Americans who religiously bought Ford F series trucks can no longer afford them and in not to many years that units purchased will continue to drop. I now look for good used trucks as I no longer can afford to buy new
You are far from being alone. All the trucks regardless of the manufacturer have become less affordable.
Has been an incorrect set of #’s for quite some time. Adding 216k to 344k give the chevy/gmc pick up 560k units. Basically the same truck.
Nope, two different brands.
You have obviously never paid for one
Están comparando peras con manzanas! Ford F150 es un pickup de trabajo y Toyota Rav 4 es un SUV, que no puede realizar los trabajos de un pickup!
What happened to the Ford F-150 , when you could buy a 1964 Pickup for $ 1,200 . Really I bought a 1 yr. old Used truck for that amount . Ford is no longer building an affordable truck ! What happened to the affordable work truck that had 8 ft. bed , and that could do the job with a 3 speed with an overdrive . It had 2 drs. and just a 292 cu. in. engine .
Yes top range diesel trucks are $100,000 plus
Ford keeps going up on the price and taking away content what do you expect. Its all on Ford and that CEO who is more interested in impressing his Porsche buddies. He needs to focus on the bread and butter their truck lines the 2024 refresh was a poor one just some grill changes and a heads up display no mechanical improvements to anything. They took away choice in colors and features. You have buy big packages to get one feature and made the truck way to expensive.
Agreed ShelbyKL. Like making the keypad on the door a $200+ option on an already $65k truck is just being greedy! Or making you buy the $12k 303A equipment group to get a power passenger seat. Really!
Ford F 150 needed a full restyle,,,,its the one long in the tooth….it looks dated, slab sided,,,same doors and body would fit a 2014 model i think…Quaility issues is another reason, problematic ecoboost engines not helping.one day they learn…it reliablity not hp…what needed
Ford> Poor quality, keep adding to the price while taking away features, dated style= poor sales.
Isn’t it amazing that three of the top ten are cars. Vehicles that For claims there is no market for. Guess there is if if those vehicles are perceived to have high value and quality.
And to think that this was a segment Ford literally pioneered. What horrible management the traditional American car companies have had this Century. Any other nation this would be a source of shame.
Jim Farley and ford higher-ups have killed fords quality yet those continue to make big bonuses. Japanese companies don’t keep people that don’t preform.
I totally agree. RAV4 and CRX combined for almost 900k units last year. Yet, Farley want to run away from this competition, calling it boring. That “boring” segment is huge. Larger if you include all the global markets Toyota and Honda sells the RAV4 and CRV… essentially unchanged except for regulatory requirements. That volume pays for a lot of overhead costs and supports a viable dealer network worldwide. Farley simply lacks business discipline and financial acumen.
Agree and boring sells especially when vehicles get more expensive and people keep their vehicles longer. Seems doing away with Edge and soon the Escape is out of step with what the consumer wants. Even GM still has the Equinox, Trax, and the Blazer (soon to be only EV). My wife has a 2013 CRV and it has been an excellent vehicle and I have a 2022 Maverick hybrid which has been a perfect retirement vehicle for me downsizing from a bigger truck. Ford should realize there is a market for smaller more affordable vehicles whether they be crossovers or small sedans they really need both along with a midsize sedan and a Lincoln Continental based on the Mustang platform.
If Toyota was to follow Ford making marketing decisions based on what the consumer wants, they’d kill that RAV4 – and then both companies would be dumb!
(think Edge, Fusion)
Out of all their configurations, it’s not possible to get 6 seats with push-button start and automatic climate control. I’m hardly saying my niche preferences cost them the crown, but I wonder if there are other unattainable configs out there that each took a tiny slice out of sales.
