YouTube channel CarWow has an affinity for the Ford Mustang. They’ve pitted a Mustang GT up against a Shelby Cobra and a Dodge Viper to see which vehicle came out on top. They’ve also matched up a seventh-gen Mustang against a BMW M2. Recently, the CarWow crew set the stage for another matchup between a Ford and a Beemer, taking a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and throwing it on track against a BMW M4 CS.
The BMW M4 CS is packing a twin-turbocharged 3.0L I6 engine good for 460 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive (RWD).On the other side of the line, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 harnesses the naturally aspirated 5.2L Predator V8 that’s been tuned to deliver 600 horsepower via a six-speed manual transmission and RWD. After warming up their tires, the two cars hit the track.
The first race doesn’t fall in favor of the Ford Mustang Shelbly GT350. A short-shift into third gear may have slowed it up, letting the BMW M4 CS gain an insurmountable run to the line. The second race goes about the same, the Mustang bucking as it navigates its gearbox, only able to watch as the BMW cruises across the line first. Interestingly, Launch Control may have hurt the Mustang, adding about a half second to its time on the quarter mile.
Finally, the Mustang gains the upper hand in a rolling start race, although it’s almost too close to call at the line. It seems that the Mustang broke across it first, but just barely. Finally, they do a test of stopping power, and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 grabs the brake a lot quicker than the BMW M4 CS, sliding to a halt well before the BMW.
All in all, both vehicles are fairly evenly matched, but at the end of the day, a manual will seldom out-shift an automatic.
