In the U.S., there are quite a few Blue Oval models that we don’t come across very often, many of which were sold only in other global markets. That’s certainly true of the Ford Cortina, which is a common sight in Europe – and specifically, the UK, where it was a best-seller for a number of years. Regardless, we’ve seen a couple of Cortinas pop up in the U.S. in recent times, and that now includes this very cool 1967 Ford Cortina Mk II racer.
This 1967 Ford Cortina Mk II is up for auction right now at Bring a Trailer, after it was converted into a race car back in 1991. The previous owner(s) proceeded to use it in various vintage racing events from 1992 all the way up until 2023, and now, the blue coupe is looking for a new home. It certainly looks the part, with various motorsports decals and graphics, but as one might imagine, there are a few imperfections such as paint bubbling. The Cortina rolls on a set of 13-inch Panasport alloy wheels wrapped with 205/60 Toyo Proxes R888 tires.
Inside, one will find a racing seat on the driver’s side that’s wrapped in a vinyl cover and fitted with a five-point harness, but the stock passenger and rear bench seat remain. A roll bar is present for safety’s sake, along with a fire suppression system, auxiliary gauges, and a power cutoff switch. As for power, it comes from the Lotus twin-cam inline-four equipped with dual Weber side-draft carburetors, plus a steel crank and cams, sending power to the wheels via a Quaife four-speed close-ratio manual transmission and a Quaife limited-slip differential.
In recent years, we’ve seen a couple of other Ford Cortina models surface for sale at auction, and both of them were also unique and interesting in their own separate ways. One was a 1970 Cortina formerly driven by soccer star Francis Lee, as well as a 1968 Ford Cortina 1600 GT Mk II.
