2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi Replacement Batteries Have Arrived

Back in June 2023, a recall was issued for 14,452 2019-2020 Ford Fusion Energi models over an issue with the battery energy control module (BECM). In those vehicles, the BECM may become damaged due to excessive voltage and current flow – potentially resulting in a loss of drive power or a fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. At that time, Ford didn’t have a remedy for the problem, and instructed owners not to charge their vehicles, as lowering the battery’s state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the battery control module. Now, replacement batteries for those impacted Ford Fusion Energi models have officially arrived.

A Ford Fusion Energi owner recently posted this letter from The Blue Oval on Reddit, which states that replacement PHEV batteries are now available. Vehicles impacted by this issue were produced between December 6th, 2017, through July 27th, 2020, as Ford Authority previously reported. Once dealers replace those defective batteries, they are allowed to sell Ford Fusion Energi models that have been placed under a stop-sale to this point.

Last June, Ford launched a buyback program for affected Ford Fusion Energi models as well, which offers customers a statutory refund of the vehicle’s purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. This amount is based on the fair market value of the vehicle, plus a 15 percent premium, and doesn’t include the cost of any modifications made to the vehicle after it was originally sold. Customers interesting in taking advantage of this program have until July 1st, 2025, to do so.

Roughly one month later, Ford released an interim fix for the issue that is designed to help prevent fires in impacted Fusion Energi models, aside from simply instructing owners to not charge their vehicles. That fix involved having dealers disable plug-in charging until parts become available, a point that we’ve now reached.
