Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2020-2022 Ford Explorer models previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 23V-199 or 22V-255. This is one of several new recalls issued to address software updates that were incorrectly applied under prior recalls.
The defect: in affected vehicles, the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.
The hazards: a disconnected driveshaft can result in vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is placed in park without the parking brake applied. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Components: rear axle horizontal mounting bolt
Affected vehicles: select 2020-2022 Ford Explorer models built between February 7th, 2019, and April 1st, 2022.
Number of vehicles affected: 4,247
The fix: dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge.
Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin April 24th, 2025. The Ford reference number for this recall is 25S22.

I have a 2024 explorer and it’s in stoneblue.
I would like to get a diecast model when it’s available.
How does a software update fix a hardware issue? That is, “…dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software…” to fix “…rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture..” Several months ago my 2020 Explorer ST’s transmisison quit working. That is, the rotary dial shifter had no effect on the engine. I was coasting down the Interstate at 70 mph in Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive! No noise, no broken parts. Dealer claimed it was a PCM communication issue.
