Bob Bondurant is an iconic figure in the world of motorsports and The Blue Oval, having earned a number of race wins over the years, along with a total of ten different motorsports hall of fame inductions. Bondurant is also known for creating the highly successful Bondurant Racing School in 1968, teaching over a half-million eager students the art of driving fast. Sadly, Bondurant passed away back in late 2021 at the age of 88, but now, one lucky person will get the chance to bring home this 1997 Ford Mustang Roush SVT Cobra that was his personal instructor car.

This particular Ford Mustang is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s Glendale, Arizona sale this week, and it’s a rather intriguing lot given the fact that it served not only as Bob Bondurant’s personal instructor car at his racing school, but also, as a show car. Originally built by Jack Roush, this gussied-up pony car features a unique decal package on the outside, along with chrome wheels, orange paint, and blue racing stripes.

Inside the cabin, one will find Bondurant’s signature on the dash, a Hurst shifter, a Recaro racing seat with a harness, a six-point roll cage, data acquisition system, and a Safecraft halon fire suppression setup. Power comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 4.6L V8, which is mated to the Tremec T45 five-speed manual transmission equipped with a 10.5-inch Cobra clutch, sending power back to a 3.73-geared rear end.

Roush also added its own unique suspension package to this Mustang Cobra, which contains Eibach springs, Monroe struts, a Roush torque arm and panhard rod assembly, plus a Roush braking system. It’s certainly a cool package, and one of a few ex-Bondurant Racing School rides that we’ve seen hit the auction block as of late – a list that also includes a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria “Cobra Vic,” as well as a 1993 Ford Taurus SHO.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  • Roush basically was SVT for the actual development work. Ford managed the designs and work. My dad managed the SVT Contour launch.
