Since it launched for the 2021 model year, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has faced an ever-growing list of competitors in the EV crossover space, though it enjoyed a notable sales surge in 2024, regardless. One of those rivals is the Toyota bZ4X, an oddly named vehicle that also debuted back in 2021 with equally unique styling. As Ford Authority reported back in January, the bZ4X will reportedly get a name change in 2026, but in the meantime, it wasn’t the winner in a recent comparison with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, regardless.
This comparison comes to us from Consumer Reports, which just named the Ford Mustang Mach-E as one of the best EVs on the market for 2025. Now, CR has released its latest list of popular electric vehicles to avoid and what to buy instead, which highlights popular EVs in five different categories, and also provides alternative options that have achieved higher overall scores from the consumer organization – which are determined based on its own testing, coupled with results from surveys collected from CR members.
In that regard, the Toyota bZ4X achieved an overall score of 55, largely due to its below average predicted reliability score and poor predicted owner satisfaction score. The bZ4X did score above average in road testing, but its as-tested range of 210 miles and EPA rating of 252 miles are below average compared to the competition. It also offers up slower charging speeds than its rivals, neither of which are ideal for longer trips.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E, on the other hand, received an overall score of 68, with above average road testing and predicted owner satisfaction scores, coupled with an average predicted reliability score. The Mach-E returned 299 miles of range in real-world testing with the extended-range battery, and it offers up much faster charging speeds. CR wasn’t a fan of the Mach-E’s ride quality, but otherwise, it performed admirably in every other measurable category.
