The Blue Oval has produced its fair share of iconic vehicles over the years, including the Ford Mustang, which has appeared in more TV shows, movies, magazines, and other pieces of pop culture than we can possibly count. As one might imagine, Ford is keen to ensure that these pieces of history are preserved for future generations, whether that be actual vehicles themselves or just vintage photos and other memorabilia. Now, Ted Ryan – the automaker’s archives and heritage brand manager – is asking for help tracking down one TV famous Ford Mustang.
I need some Mustang help! I am trying to track down who owns this Mary Tyler Moore Mustang? If anyone has a lead, let me know! #Mustang #MaryTylerMoore https://t.co/JZwJwd4uzj pic.twitter.com/upPmDEZnbv

That pony car is the 1973 Ford Mustang featured in the opening scene of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, a sitcom starring the actress of the same name that debuted on CBS in 1970 and hung around for seven seasons. That show won a whopping 29 Primetime Emmy Awards and is largely celebrated for featuring a main character who was female, and yet, not married or dependent on a man, yet also career-driven – something that was quite uncommon on television at the time.
As for the blue 1973 Ford Mustang that starred in the opening sequence of the Mary Tyler More Show, we last saw it cross the auction block at Mecum’s 2021 Indy sale. It was originally loaned by the automaker to the show’s producer, and has changed hands a few times since then. The car was restored back in 1999, but otherwise, it’s unclear where it went roughly four years ago, as well as where it might be located today.
This isn’t the first time Ryan has asked for the public’s help, however, as he also called on vintage Ford F-150 owners to provide photos of themselves with their trucks that were later used at the reveal of the refreshed 2024 F-150, too.
