One can do everything right while out on the road and still get wrecked by an inattentive driver. A first generation Ford Edge was following traffic laws – and being courteous to a jogger crossing an intersection – when they were rear-ended by another motorist not paying attention, and the worst part is there’s nothing they could have done differently to avoid it.
The video was recorded in Austin, Texas, and posted to the Reddit community r/Dashcam. The cam car isn’t involved in the incident, but captures it across the intersection. The Ford Edge is turning right on a green light across an active crosswalk, inching into the intersection before they notice a jogger is headed their direction.
The Ford Edge stops to allow the jogger to pass them safely, and that’s when trouble strikes. A vintage Toyota Land Cruiser comes up behind them and fails to stop, tapping the rear bumper of the Ford crossover. It lurches forward, and it’s not clear if it strikes the jogger, but if it did, the contact was minimal. The Ford Edge pulls off to the side of the road, and it appears the damage to its rear bumper is minimal, but still may need repairs.
The jogger collects herself and tells the Toyota driver off, no doubt chiding them for their boneheaded actions at the stoplight. The lesson to be learned here? Even if you legally have the right of way in an intersection, don’t assume it’s clear and check all directions before taking your foot off the brake.
This isn’t the only viral video showing a Ford involved in a rear-ending incident. An inebriated driver of an S550 Ford Mustang blew through an intersection, cutting off a driver before circling back to rear-end that same car. A different kind of rear-end issue struck a Ford Bronco whose driver managed to mangle the rear axle of their off-road SUV while trying to get it unstuck.
