Owners of Ford EVs have received quite a few updates as it pertains to Android and iOS features over the past few months, whether that be improved integration on mobile devices or any other number of fresh additions. Back in January, Ford EVs became the first to get the Google Maps EV route planning feature, which provides information such as what state of charge they can expect to have when they arrive at their destination, suggested charging stops along their route, and the minimum amount of charge time the system recommends for each stop. Now, Apple CarPlay users are getting their own welcome update.
Starting today, when Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning owners using Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay plan a trip and need to charge, they can automatically be routed to a fast charging station that utilizes the North American Charging Standard (NACS) – such as Tesla’s Supercharger stations. Owners don’t even have to install a software update to gain this new feature, as it’s available with CarPlay and iPhones running iOS 17 or later.
Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay allows drivers to input their route and view the estimated battery level they’ll have when they arrive at their destination, as well as suggested charging stations along the way if charging is needed. Previously, Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning drivers would have to manually open another app, then enter an NACS fast charger as a destination to have it added to their route. To experience the update, drivers will need to change one particular setting, however.
To utilize this feature, users must first have CarPlay running, then open Apple Maps, go to settings, and set the preferred charging network to NACS – this only has to be done once. Then, they can simply enter a destination, and Apple Maps will calculate the estimated state of charge they’ll have when they arrive, and if charging is required along that route, it will automatically route the owner to an NACS station.
