The Ford Explorer EV and Capri EV – both underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform – have been on sale in Europe for months now, but demand hasn’t quite reached expected levels. As such, The Blue Oval opted to scale back production of those all-electric crossovers at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Germany in late 2024/early 2025. However, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently revealed that the automaker would be doubling its EV output this year despite slow sales for the Ford Explorer and Capri EVs, and now we might know why.
FoMoCo has announced that it’s expanding the Ford Explorer and Capri EV lineup by adding new entry-level versions that start out at €39,990 ($43,125 USD) for the Explorer and €42,490 ($45,821 USD) for the Capri. The automaker is also making an array of changes to those models, introducing new Style and Select finishes to replace the existing Explorer offerings, new Comfort and Comfort AGR packages, a Winter Pack, and a new standard color – Lucid Red Premium Metallic, which replaces Arctic Blue. The B&O sound system is no longer standard but can be had as an option on Select and Premium trims, and customers can still get all-season tires, but they’ll cost €200 ($215 USD) more than before.
“This is great news for our customers! “said Louis-Carl Vignon, President of Ford France. “Ford has always worked to make mobility more accessible. With the introduction of these new versions of Electric Explorer and Capri we remain true to our values. These changes will allow us to offer an electrical proposal that is still as efficient, versatile and even more accessible.”
These moves come as Ford Europe continues to struggle in terms of selling EVs and passenger cars in general, prompting an additional $5 billion dollar infusion of cash from The Blue Oval. Ford has also been calling on officials to roll out robust incentives for EVs, sentiments that were later echoed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
