Even when roads appear clear, it’s imperative to keep an eye out for hidden dangers while traveling on twisting two-lane mountain roads, especially after a storm – unlike the driver of a Ford Explorer that fell victim to black ice in Colorado not too long ago. What looked like a simple wet patch turned out to be a sheet of slick ice, sending the SUV into an unexpected spin that took a turn for the worse when the vehicle flipped side-over-side into oncoming traffic.
The incident was recorded on Highway 91 near Copper Mountain in Colorado and posted to the r/COSnow community on Reddit by the cammer themselves. The video shows the Explorer start to get squirrelly around a turn heading the opposite direction, snapping completely sideways and spinning into the other lane.
Unfortunately, it gets worse from there – the Ford Explorer slams into a snowbank and goes straight up into the air, pivoting several times in midair before coming down onto its side. It rolls once more before coming to a rest on all four tires with loose snow and debris spewed across the highway.
Both the cammer and the truck in front of them halt and rush to the driver’s aid. According to the original poster, the Ford Explorer didn’t suffer major visible damage in the dramatic side-over-side wreck. The airbags did not deploy and the SUV was able to be driven away from the crash site, while its driver suffered a bloody nose.
Of course, there’s no telling what sort of damage could have been dealt to the vehicle’s suspension and frame, so hopefully, the driver brought the Explorer into a shop to get checked out after the fact – and get themselves to the doctor, too.
A Ford F-150 got off lighter than this Explorer, but still suffered a scary incident on an icy road in Tennessee a few years ago when it slid after backing out of its driveway.
