Ford F-150 Lightning OTA Update Speeds Up Fast Charging: Video

Historically speaking, the Ford F-150 Lightning hasn’t performed too terribly well in various fast charging tests conducted by third-parties, which is obviously not great news for folks that tend to road trip their EV pickups. On the bright side, this is something that doesn’t necessarily require a major hardware update to rectify – in fact, Ford continues to roll out over-the-air software updates that have improved the F-150 Lightning in various ways since its launch. As it turns out, a recent one helped improve the charging speed of the Ford F-150 Lightning, too.

In this new video from the YouTube channel State of Charge, we get a breakdown of a recent OTA update for the 2022-2023 Ford F-150 Lightning, which enables it to charge at 500 amps, rather than the previous speed of 450 amps. To measure how much of a difference this makes, a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning was charged from 10-80 percent using a 350 kW DC fast charger, both before and after the OTA update was applied.

With the update installed, it took around 39.5 minutes to charge the F-150 Lightning from 10-80 percent, at a rate of around 7.5 miles added per minute of charging, on average, which isn’t the best figure, admittedly. In fact, prior to installing the update, the pickup added the same amount of charge over the first 16 minutes of that session, but it still sped up after that, resulting in a shorter session.

After compiling all the numbers, it’s clear that this OTA update does help the 2022-2023 Ford F-150 Lightning DC fast charge at a more rapid rate than before. Prior to the installation of this update, it took around 43-45 minutes for this particular pickup to go from a 10-80 percent state of charge, but after the update was installed, it cut down that time to the aforementioned 39.5 minutes – a difference of 3-5 minutes, basically. It may not seem like much, but for those driving longer distances, those few minutes at a charging station can certainly add up.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
