Ford Mustang Mach-E Wins 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

Since it debuted for the 2021 model year, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has garnered plenty of praise from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its abundance of safety features and performance in crash testing. Even as IIHS has updated various portions of its crash testing, the Mach-E continues to perform well, even as others haven’t, and the 2024 model also earned a Top Safety Pick+ Award, the highest honor that agency dishes out. After undergoing some updates for the 2025 model year, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has repeated that feat yet again, too.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has once again earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award for 2025, becoming one of 36 new automotive models to do so, while 12 others were awarded the lesser Top Safety Pick honor. Those 48 models represent a pretty big drop from last year’s tally of 71, which makes this accolade even more meaningful. This year, the updated moderate overlap front test adds a second dummy seated behind the driver and emphasizes back seat safety, and vehicles must earn an acceptable rating in that updated test to qualify for a Top Safety Pick Award, or a good rating to achieve Top Safety Pick+ status.

As was previously the case, vehicles must also earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation, which gauges performance in both daytime and nighttime conditions, to quality for either award. All trim levels of those models must also be equipped with acceptable- or good-rated headlights. The Ford Mustang Mach-E earned good ratings in all crash testing, headlights, and crash prevention testing, along with an acceptable rating for child seat belt/restraint latch ease of use.

“We’re once again challenging automakers to make their new models even safer than those they were building a year ago,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “Every vehicle that earns a 2025 award offers a high level of safety in both the front seat and the second row. “There’s still progress to be made, but these results show that manufacturers are working hard to make their vehicles as safe for back seat passengers as they are for those up front. Consumers looking for a new vehicle offering the highest level of protection for their families should put these award winners at the top of their list.”
