Ford Pickups, SUVs Recalled Over Trailer Brake Controller Issue

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for a number of Ford pickups and SUVs, as well as Lincoln SUVs, over an issue regarding the vehicles’ brake controllers. Impacted vehicles – which include certain units of the 2021 and 2022 Ford Maverick; certain Ford F-Series models; select 2022 Ford Expedition units; and select 2022 Lincoln Navigator models – were not correctly repaired under a prior recall for the same issue.

The defect: due to a software error, a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric over hydraulic brake system may not brake.

The hazards: loss of trailer brake functionality could result in an extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford Motor Company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Components: trailer brake controller software.

Affected vehicles: select 2022 Ford Maverick models produced between February 3rd, 2021 and February 22nd, 2022; select 2021 – 2022 Ford F-150 models produced between October 5th, 2020 and February 15th, 2022; select 2022 Ford Super Duty models (including the F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550) built between May 28th, 2021 and May 14th, 2022; Select 2022 Ford Expedition models built between December 7th, 2021 and February 10th, 2022; and select 2022 Lincoln Navigator models produced between March 9th, 2021 and February 17th, 2022.

Number of vehicles affected: 10,627 vehicles (all models)

The fix: dealers will update the integrated trailer brake control module with the correct software, free of charge.

Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin on April 14th, 2025.
