Ford Ranger PHEV Won’t Be Offered In America: Report

The first-ever Ford Ranger PHEV (plug-in hybrid) model debuted back in September 2023, giving fans of the mid-size pickup that reside in certain global markets an electrified powertrain option. Since then, it’s been unclear what markets the Ranger PHEV will be sold in, outside of places like Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and The Netherlands, though many customers in the U.S. were hoping that it would wind up on those shores, too. Unfortunately for them, a new report indicates that this won’t be the case.

This report comes to us from the Detroit Free Press, which states that the Ford Ranger PHEV won’t be sold in the U.S. “any time soon,” as The Blue Oval is planning on selling only pure ICE versions of the mid-size pickup in America for the foreseeable future – at least, unless consumer interest dictates otherwise. “But if we see there is demand for a Ranger, we would absolutely consider it,” said Sondra Phung, head of Ford Global Trucks. “At this point, we believe we have a very strong portfolio of hybrids in the U.S.”

Even though the Ford Ranger PHEV won’t be sold in the U.S. soon or perhaps ever, we do know that a hybrid variant of some sort is in the pipeline, as The Blue Oval plans to add an electrified powertrain option across the entire ICE-focused Ford Blue lineup by 2030. That model could be a traditional hybrid or even an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), a type of powertrain we know Ford is currently developing for more than one model – though the first is at least two years away.

Ford is also working on a low-cost all-electric platform that’s set to underpin a mid-size pickup first, which may or may not wear the Ranger badge. CEO Jim Farley previously stated that he sees smaller pickups and crossovers as the “sweet spot” for all-electric power at the moment too, given the state of current battery technology.

  2. Ford seems to be protecting the F 150 Hybrid / power on Board from losing sales to a similar configured Ranger. Also, the Maverick Hybrid is selling well enough to keep the Ranger Hybrid versions on the side line. Too bad as I too would be very interested in a Ranger Power On Board Hybrid. Time will tell.

  3. I am sorry to hear Ford has not listening to the public once again about the PHEW. I have a Ford Ranger 2008 would like to have a new Ranger but was waiting for the PHEW model to come to America. I have all ways been a Ford fan but lately with all the recalls and Ford seemly going downhill maybe it’s time to switch Companies.

  4. Well, they at least made a change to the Ranger base 2.3L engine for 2025. Looks like they may be streamlining the versions ? The new one looks similar to pics of Bronco and Mustang 2.3L

  5. This a GRAVE mis-step by Ford! I hope your are reading this Jim. Also to the comment just above is, yes, Ford has put the new MPC 2.3 Ecoboost underneth the hood of the 2025 Bronco/Ranger

  6. This is so frustrating to hear. Ford has teased a Ranger hybrid for several years now, and I was very much looking forward to buying one as soon as they were available,. The PHEV Ranger’s towing capacity is exactly what I needed, as the Maverick’s capacity is just not enough. And I will not be forced to pay the high bill for an F150 hybrid that would be overkill on capacity. Year after year Ranger PHEV coming to the U.S. was pushed back, but always with the implication it was coming soon. I waited patiently nonetheless. Hearing this now is so disappointing. I am done with Ford.
