Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Ranger sales shot up to 15,526 units during Q4 2024 when ranked by sales volume, as The Blue Oval’s midsize truck recovers from a generational changeover. That places the all-new, next-generation Ranger in third place in its segment when ranked by sales volume.

Toyota Tacoma sales continued to soar as it has also moved past its own generational changeover, with the best-seller posting a 20 percent jump in sales to 66,008 units. The Chevy Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales) remained in second place with a 120 percent jump to 27,302 units, while the Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) remained in third. The Nissan Frontier kept fourth with a 13 percent bump to 13,898 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, remained in fifth place with a 262 percent leap to 11,259 deliveries, while the Jeep Gladiator remained last with a 31 percent drop to 9,453 units. Both GM pickups have also navigated a recovery from a generational changeover about a year ago.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford Ranger sales returned to healthy levels and even healthier growth during Q4 2024 and for the 2024 calendar year, but still fell well short of the Chevy Colorado during the quarter. Both the Ranger and Colorado significantly trailed the perennially best-selling Toyota Tacoma. All of these trucks have recovered from a generational changeover.

We’ll see if The Blue Oval’s all-new midsize pickup truck will continue to gain sales traction in the reborn midsize truck space, as Ford, GM (Chevy and GMC), Nissan, and Toyota have introduced next-generation models with new variants over the past two years.

About Ford Ranger

In May 2023, the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger debuted with all-new tech and a 2.7L V6 EcoBoost. The carryover turbocharged Ford 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost gasoline engine produces 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, while the new, optional twin-turbocharged Ford 2.7L V6 EcoBoost generates 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Both are mated exclusively to the Ford 10-speed automatic transmission, giving the new Ranger a payload capacity of up to 1,805 pounds and a max towing limit of 7,500 pounds.

The 2024 Ranger also debuts the high-performance Ranger Raptor, powered by the twin-turbocharged Ford 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, which will be sold in the U.S. for the very first time after existing in international markets for years now. The engine is rated at 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel, sending power to the wheels via Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, an electronically-controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, and front- and rear-locking differentials.

That means the 2024 Ford Ranger line-up is offered in XL, XLT, Lariat, and Raptor trim levels.

In addition to new styling inside and out along with a handful of other major changes, the 2024 Ranger nearly matches the EPA fuel economy ratings of its predecessor, as Ford Authority previously reported.

Production of the 2025 Ford Ranger commenced in January.

  1. If Ford wants more volume in the US, they need to introduce the SuperCab with the rear seat deleted and replaced with modular accessory mounts.

  2. The Ford Rangers are nice but they are pricey also. But a good truck.

  3. Ford Rangers sales will continue to climb if they add more variety to its lineup. Low hanging fruit would be to bring back the Tremor package that was incredibly popular (and profitable). A Tremor with that 2.7l will sell like hotcakes (I’d personally buy one). More bed and cab configurations would also help eat at Tacoma market share too. I’ll take a SuperCrew longbed with that Tremor too.

    1. And let’s bring on the PHEV version that I would personally buy one.
