Buying a pre-owned vehicle can be a gamble. There’s no real way to know how the prior owner took care of it. In the case of a Ford Transit van purchased by YouTuber Will’s Whereabouts, he was strung along by the seller and completely lied to about the vehicle’s history. While Will does have some regrets about the purchase, it all ended up working out in the end.
The van was advertised as driving perfectly, which was an outright lie. Will says he’s put a lot of work into getting the Ford Transit running again, including a turbo replacement, but it still isn’t running quite right, and has no power in the higher gears.
The Ford Transit van was formerly an Amazon delivery van, meaning it was driven hard every day and put away wet. To boot, it hasn’t thrown any codes that indicate a fault. Thanks to some help from a local shop, Will narrowed the issue down to the antilock braking system (ABS) and traction control system (TCS). Bypassing the TCS suddenly gives the Ford Transit back its power, as it’s no longer trying to cut power to the engine due to a perceived loss of traction. After recalibrating the sensors, the van is fixed and actually has power – well, as much power as a beat up Ford Transit van can have.
Moreover, Will discovers something else awry with his van: the paperwork shows the incorrect registration number. That means all the service history he was given for this Ford Transit isn’t correct, and none of the work has actually been done to this particular vehicle.
Overall, Will says he’s sunk £5,969 into the Ford Transit from start to finish, which is more than he probably should have thrown at it. Regardless, he says that the knowledge he acquired about the inner workings of vehicles along the way has made the journey worth it.
Scammers are unfortunately rampant in the automotive industry worldwide. In fact, a Ford store in New Hampshire turned to Internet sleuths to help them track down a buyer who made off with a 2020 Ford Super Duty after paying with a fraudulent check. Thankfully, the effort was successful.
