Ford Utility Sales Down Four Percent, But SUVs and EV All Post Gains During Q4 2024

Ford utility sales decreased four percent to 187,300 units in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2024.

Utility – or utility vehicles – include the Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Edge, Ford EscapeFord Explorer, and all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E unibody crossovers, plus the Ford Bronco and Ford Expedition body-on-frame SUVs.

The two SUVs and lone EV were the only ones in the green.

For the crossovers, the full-size, three-row Explorer still outsold the rest of its corporate siblings, though sales were down three percent to 47,295 deliveries. It was followed by the compact Escape crossover, also down three percent to 36,383 units. The rugged Bronco Sport compact crossover posted a two percent dip to 30,344 deliveries as the all-electric Mustang Mach-E saw a 36 percent jump to 16,119 units. Finally, the discontinued Edge sold 5,024 examples as remaining inventory exits dealer lots.

The Ford Authority Take

The SUVs and lone EV here were the standouts for Ford utility sales during the fourth quarter of 2024, all posting healthy gains. But the ICE-powered crossovers were each just slightly down by roughly two percent.

Meanwhile, FoMoCo has discontinued its popular Edge midsize crossover. Production ended in May 2024 at the Ford Oakville Assembly plant in Canada to make way for potential EV models, but those have been delayed. A grand total of 2,609,545 units of the Edge were built over the model’s 2007-2024 lifespan. However, the nameplate lives on in China via an all-new model, which we really like.

  1. Somewhat misleading article. Percentages show only so much. While the Mach e was up a rosy 27% last year, is sells only a quarter as many Explorers, a third as many Escapes, half as many Broncos, etc. in fact, it has the lowest number of sales on the list.
