Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Mach 4” with Intellectual Property Australia (IPA), Ford Authority has learned.
Filed on February 25th, 2025, under serial number 2525073, this application contain the goods and services description of “motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”
The Ford Authority Take
As Ford Authority reported back in February, FoMoCo recently filed to trademark “Mach 4” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This filing was particularly notable given the fact that Mach 4 could wind up being the name used on the long-rumored four-door version of the Ford Mustang, which is a concept that has existed since the pony car debuted decades ago, and yet, has only intensified as of late. Now, that same trademark filing has surfaced in the country of Australia, too.
Rumors of a four-door Ford Mustang have swirled for many years to this point, and in fact, that very concept dates back to a time when the first example of the original, first-generation pony car had even been sold. Back in the fall of 2018, word got out that The Blue Oval was thinking about building a four-door Ford Mustang sedan, and about a month later, Ford reportedly showed such a concept to dealers. Then, in June 2020, a report surfaced claiming that a four-door Mustang was indeed “on the table,” but it was a few years before that rumor intensified.
Then, in May 2024, Ford CEO Jim Farley himself said that he “believes” the automaker could make a four-door Mustang, so long as it has “all the performance and attitude of the original.” A few months later, in August, Ford reportedly showed a number of renderings, mockups, and photos of some future Ford Mustang variants, which included a four-door coupe reportedly called the Mach 4, as well as a lifted, off-road, Baja-style model with rugged tires, an RTR-modified Mustang EcoBoost with a $40k price tag, and a high-performance, V8-powered convertible that looked a lot like the older Shelby GT350/GT500 variants, albeit, sans any Shelby badging. Just this past January, Executive Chairman Bill Ford didn’t rule out a four-door Mustang, either.
As Ford Authority exclusively reported last September, Ford actually created a design study of a four-door Mustang sedan based on the S197 generation model some time ago. The automaker even went so far as to create a full-scale model of this Mustang sedan around 2005, though unfortunately, photos of that model are unavailable, and like all design studies, this was an internal concept that was never shown to the public. Obviously, that model never came to fruition, though now, the reality of a Ford Mustang sedan seems to be as strong a possibility as it ever has been, given the appearance of this new trademark filing.
Comments
The international filing may be just blocking tactic to prevent any other mfr. from using it; “Peugeot Mach 4” etc.
No it’s happening. With all the rumors going around and the “Mach 4” name being brought up during that secret meeting this shows us that Farley is turning the Mustang into a normal fleet car.
Kawasaki sold a “Mach IV” in 1969…
Ford is getting close to going hypersonic.
…more like CFIT.
LOL
Ford filing the “Mach 4” name in Australia is a slap in the face to all those people who got their Falcon cancelled because sedans supposedly didn’t sell anymore.
The Mach 4 will look more Mustang-like than what a Falcon would or should, so it might cause market confusion if you have a 2dr Mustang and a 4dr Falcon. Although, Toyota did with the Camry and Solara.
Someone did renders on the forum of a Falcon based on the S650 and it looked pretty good. Had obvious Mustang DNA while looking like the 2016 Falcon successor.
Are we ignoring the possibility that a Mach 4 could be the lifted, off-road version that was also shown to dealers? I’m not sure who would buy such a car, but the point of specialized models is to get people talking about the brand.
No four door Mustang. You would ruin the looks of a beautiful Mustang. You have the Mach E which is a 4 door, leave it at that. If I want a 4 door I will buy the Mach E.
Another one to add to the list of “Farley’s follies.” Can’t Ford do anything new without tying it to the Mustang (which if we are to ever have a next generation, needs to be smaller, lighter and cheaper). The Mustang Mach E should have simply been the Mach E. If Ford is going to do a four door car it should be a re boot of the Fusion.
If Ford is going with a more door Mustang sedan it’s a sure bet, they are looking at an M3 competitor. People have a tough time accepting it (in part because say Europeans derisively dismiss the Mustang as a “muscle car” with the poor handling and braking that implies and Americans stubbornly cling to the idea that the Mustang is a muscle car even though it has never fit the definition with the exception of a few years and models), but Ford has positioned the coupe as an American M2/M4 competitor (Jason Camissa pointed this out in a video a few years ago).
Ford probably still feels there isn’t a market for a mid-sized front wheel drive sedans. Toyota and Honda have the market locked down pretty good with GM coming in distant third and likely due to fleet sales (the source I looked at didn’t break it down). Besides in order to make a dent they would have design and build an absolutely killer product and maintain that for years building a reputation (Ford’s 1st gen Taurus comes to mind, people loved it then they dropped the ball with reliability problems and of course the milquetoast 2nd gen car that cost them their market position as Toyota came on strong and took the crown).
Yeah they’re going to fail miserably. I think Farley just wants fleets sales more than actually competing.
It would be a very appropriate addition, and a great option from the coupe!
“If you build it, THEY will come”
Can’t wait to see Mustang Taxis and cop cars. Farley says he wants unique iconic cars but is turning the Mustang into a commodity vehicle.
That’s Ok with me!
Just make it available with the manual transmission!!!
Please don’t bastardize the Mustang. If you want to make a new model, give it a name other than Mustang. Call it the Fairmont or Granada or Maverick or Falcon.
Maverick?
Yes Ford, do it, it will be a smart move.
I don’t know about that considering all the cars Ford did that to died off. Mustang is about to be the Thunderbird 2.0
