Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Removable And Dockable Displays

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for removable and dockable displays that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on September 11th, 2023, published on March 13th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0083524.

The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas such as an interior vehicle module (or a screen that can move up and down), as well as modular infotainment displays, clear signs that the automaker envisions a future in which its vehicles may feature screens that don’t just sit fixed in one place. Now, this newly published patent takes that concept to an entirely new level by presenting us with an idea for removable and dockable displays that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

In this case, screens inside of vehicles would certainly be able to move around – up and down, side to side, or even pivot around – but that isn’t the only interesting thing about that concept. Rather, those screens would also be removable, which means that one could set them in all kinds of places. In these patent drawings, we see several examples of that, with screens moving to places like the frunk of an EV or even the bed of a pickup.

There are many reasons why such an idea could prove useful, if it comes to fruition. Perhaps one may want to sit outside of the vehicle and watch TV or live sporting events when tailgating, or even a YouTube tutorial on how to repair something. If nothing else, it’s an interesting concept, and one that we’d certainly like to see in future Ford vehicles.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
