Cars crashing through the fronts of businesses is a surprisingly common occurrence – and the reason for parking pylons at many storefronts. Unfortunately, a restaurant recently found itself on the receiving end of a Mercury Grand Marquis when a driver sped across a parking lot and slammed into the front of the establishment.
The original poster submitted the clip, which was captured on a security camera, to the r/IdiotsInCars community on Reddit. The video shows an overview of a small parking lot, when suddenly, the Mercury Grand Marquis screams into the shot. While the driver may not be going “full speed” like the original poster claims, they’re definitely traveling too fast for a parking lot, and show no signs of stopping or even comprehension of the brake pedal’s location in their vehicle.
Then, the Mercury Grand Marquis strikes the front of the restaurant and bounces off. It’s not clear what damage the impact caused to either the building or the vehicle itself, but it’s likely significant. Thankfully, a set of bollards likely lessened the danger of the crash. The original poster stated in the comments that if the bollards hadn’t been in place, the Mercury Grand Marquis would have ended up in their bathroom.
Unfortunately, the circumstances that led to the incident aren’t clear, but the original poster states that the driver of the Grand Marquis was an elderly man. They also say that the speed limit on the road outside the restaurant is 25 mph, so it’s possible that either the driver had a medical emergency and couldn’t slow down – or just accidentally stood on the accelerator while going for the brake.
Interestingly, Mercury drivers are hailed as some of the safest drivers in the U.S. (although, obviously, not in this instance). Mercury owners also tend to commit fewer DUIs than drivers of other automakers.
The driver of a Ford Transit Connect van pulled a similar stunt earlier this year when they absolutely demolished a homeowner’s mailbox while attempting to make a delivery.
