The Ford F-150 was just treated to a refresh for the 2024 model year, with the venerable best-selling pickup previously on track to get its next redesign in 2027. However, as Ford Authority recently reported, the next-generation F-150 has reportedly been pushed back to 2028, with production now slated to begin that spring. That delay could mean that GM may have a bit of an upper hand, too, as the 2027 Chevy Silverado may wind up beating the next-generation Ford F-150 to market by some time.
GM Authority recently spotted a 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 prototype out testing, in fact, and even though it’s clad in heavy camo, we can derive a few clues as to what we can expect from that model’s forthcoming redesign. The Crew Cab, Short Box pickup is equipped with non-production headlights mounted quite a bit lower than the ones on the current model, which flank a grille that contains numerous horizontal slats and a front camera, for starters. Other notable features present up front include bumper-mounted fog lights, sensors, and a front air dam.
Moving down the side, this 2027 Chevy Silverado prototype is wearing wheels with camo in the spokes themselves, wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires. The side mirrors look to be quite similar to the ones on the existing pickup, though they’re mounted on a new apparatus, and each incorporates LEDs used for the model’s Perimeter Lighting feature. A fixed running board spans the length of the cab and extends all the way to the rear wheel well, too.
Out back, this 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 prototype is equipped with a sliding rear window, along with taillights containing a new LED signature – signaling that they may be production-ready, unlike the headlights. We also get a glimpse at the familiar CornerStep feature, a tow hitch receiver, and a camo’d bumper and tailgate. As for the square quad exhaust tips, well, they’re pretty unique and look much like the ones present on a number of other GM models – including the 2025 Tahoe/Suburban.
In terms of powertrains, the 2027 Chevy Silverado will usher in the arrival of GM’s new sixth-generation small block powerplants, which will provide a boost in terms of efficiency. They’re expected to be joined by the existing turbocharged L3B four-cylinder TurboMax engine and LZ0 3.0L turbodiesel Duramax, along with a potential plug-in hybrid setup – though that may arrive later on. The updated pickup will ride on GM’s revised T1-2 architecture, and is expected to launch in 2026 for the 2027 model year.

My F150’s 36 month lease will be done in early 2027, I lease every 3 years because there has always been a new F150 to lease again…what will Ford do?! Or will I have to look at the competition?
Is it that urgent?
Or the lease cannot be extended?
By 2028, I think there will be a new F 150….
