While many think of V8 power when they envision the legendary Ford Thunderbird, in general, there were obviously many other types of powerplants available in that sporty model over its many generations of production, too. Aside from more pedestrian performers, the Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is of particular interest to enthusiasts, as it offered up strong performance in time when not many vehicles did – not to mention unique looks as well. This 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is a fine example of that particular model, and it has barely been driven since new, to boot.
Rather, this 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe – which is up for auction at Bring a Trailer – has only 6k miles showing on the odometer, which is incredibly low for any vehicle of this vintage. It lived with the original owner until 2022, when it was acquired by the selling dealer, but neither of those parties used it much, as one can tell. As one might imagine, it remains in stellar condition as a result, with its Medium Red Clearcoat Metallic paint showing no obvious flaws, which is also true of the 16-inch wheels.
The interior of this T-Bird has earned the old “time capsule”as well, with virtually perfect power-adjustable two-tone gray cloth front seats and a rear bench, plus amenities including a cassette stereo system with a graphic equalizer, power windows, power locks, cruise control, and automatic climate control. Power comes from the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 engine that was originally rated to produce 190 horsepower, mated to a five-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential.
We don’t often see too many Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe models surface for sale these days, and certainly none with the sort of mileage this one has traveled. However, we did come across another very nice 1987 model roughly one month ago, and it had a very reasonable 37k miles showing on the odometer.
The Chevy and GMC models were the only ones in the green this time around.
It can be used for much more than just drifting.
It's unclear if the automaker is considering such a thing.
It's one of only 35 built and two finished in this color.
The only example ever finished in Rosso Red.
Outselling Audi, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Alfa Romeo.

Such a great looking car. Ford styling killed it with the Gen 2 Fox T-birds.
Back when Ford was an industry leader and you could not wait to see what was next from them.......unlike today 😞
Sweet Ride!! I would love to have this Bird!!
I have seen this car before and it sells but the buyer never keeps it for very long. The 2.3 4-cylinder turbo is a great engine I have had 3 between the mustang and the T bird. I have had 7 mustangs since 1974.
I had an '87 V6 T-bird that was incredibly nice driving and looked great, but everyone wanted this Turbo Coupe!
I had a new '87 T-bird with a V6 that drove well and was incredibly nice looking, but everyone wanted the Turbo Coupe!
I also like the 3.8 with the Supercharger.
