Ford Celebrates 100 Years Of Operating In Mexico

After more than 120 years in business, Ford has certainly enjoyed its fair share of milestones – many of which have occurred over the past few years. Those milestones haven’t just happened in the U.S., either – rather, Ford Motor Company has operations spanning much of the globe, and that’s been the case for a very long time in some cases, too. In fact, Ford Australia just celebrated 100 years since it was founded, and Ford Mexico has also now reached the century mark, too.

Ford Mexico began operating way back in 1925 as the first automotive company in that country, in fact, when it opened its first plant that June in San Lázaro, Mexico City – right after the revolutionary war ended. Much has changed over the ensuing 100 years, and today, Ford Mexico employs 14,600 people. The Blue Oval has its own headquarters in Mexico, along with the Global Technology and Business Center (GTBC), and Ford Motor Credit Company, to boot.

Ford also operates stamping and assembly plants in various parts of Mexico as well, as most are well aware. That includes the Hermosillo Assembly plant, which builds the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Maverick, as well as the Cuautitlan Assembly plant, where the Ford Mustang Mach-E is produced. At the Chihuahua Engine plant, The Blue Oval assembles its 2.0L I-4 Duratec and 2.5L I-4 Duratec engines, the turbocharged 6.7L V8 Power Stroke diesel, 4.4L diesel, and 1.5L I-3 EcoBoost motors, while Ford also has a plant in Irapuato that builds electric motors.

Several of those plants have celebrated milestones in recent years, too – the Hermosillo Assembly plant marked its 35th anniversary in 2021, while the Chihuahua Engine plant reached 40 years in late 2023, and the Cuautitlan Assembly plant celebrated 60 years of operation just this past November.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. That is the way it should be with our neighbors and with no tariff. A company cannot make every model in the same building, or same country, so as Ford and other companies have done, build a model in that location, which could be a different country.
It would make no sense, or dollars to build a certain model in each country for them alone. That is why Ford imports vehicle from different countries, with no tariffs when this plan was developed.

  2. There should be no tariff for Canada and Mexico. Let’s just stick it to China and call it a day.
