Ford Explorer Among Europe’s Top 25 Best Selling EVs Of March 2025

The adoption of electric vehicle in Europe hasn’t been exactly groundbreaking, but battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been steadily eating into the share of the pie traditionally held by internal combustion (ICE) based models. For the first time, the Ford Explorer EV managed to crack the list of top 25 most-registered vehicles in Europe during February – an honor it clung to in March, too.

According to the latest data from JATO Dynamics, the Ford Explorer slotted in 19th among the top 25 of its all-electric brethren. Specifically, 3,903 units of the Explorer EV were registered during March, placing it ahead of the Cupra Born (3,891 units), Toyota bZ4X (3,444), Dacia Spring (3,398), Porsche Macan (3,304), Cupra Tavascan (3,291), and Volvo EX40 (3,176).

Meanwhile, up top, the BEV segment was still dominated by the Tesla Model Y (15,164), Tesla Model 3 (12,500), Volkswagen ID.4 (7,675), Volkswagen ID.7 (7,438), and Kia EV3 (7,173) rounding out the top five.

All told, BEVs accounted for 16.9 percent of total vehicle registrations in Europe. That marks a 2.7 percentage point increase in market share compared to March 2024, with volumes up 23 percent year-over-year. Q1 2025, meanwhile, was the strongest quarter for BEV registrations on record.

“March was a momentous month for BEV registrations in Europe indicating that the positive response we are seeing to the continually broadening offer is finally having a real impact on the overall market,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics.

March also represented the second-best month on record for battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations. While adoption of all-electric models has slowed some, they continue to expand their grip on the market. The all-new, all-electric Ford Puma Gen-E debuted for the European market back in December 2024, joining the Ford Explorer EV, and the BEV models are being rolled out in Germany, bolstering Ford’s offerings in the country. However, on a greater scale, The Blue Oval is focused on prioritization of the highly-profitable and successful Ford Pro commercial business, which involves “right-sizing” its passenger vehicle business.
