Ford Explorer Tremor Almost Certainly Packs 2.3L EcoBoost

Just yesterday, Ford Authority spotted three 2025 Ford Explorer Tremor prototypes out testing with zero camouflage, giving us our best look yet at the replacement for the outgoing Timberline. As expected, the new Ford Explorer Tremor looks quite a lot like the Timberline, sporting many of the same exact exterior features, though we don’t yet know what lies underneath that exterior in terms of interior features or powertrains. Among the many features present on these Ford Explorer Tremor prototypes, however, one seems to indicate that the new model will come equipped with a specific powerplant.

A photo showing a 2025 Ford Explorer Tremor prototype from a front three quarters angle.

That powerplant is the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost engine, which seems likely to be present under the hood of the Ford Explorer Tremor given the presence of dual exhaust tips at the rear of all three prototypes that we spotted. Currently, all Explorer models equipped with the 2.3L powerplant have a dual exhaust, while those packing the more potent twin turbocharged 3.0L V6 EcoBoost have quad exhaust tips. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the 3.0L EcoBoost won’t be available in the new Tremor – it could be offered as an option – but that seems unlikely at the moment.

The Ford Explorer Timberline was also offered exclusively with the 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost engine, and given the fact that it shares much in common with its predecessor, that only lends even more credence to the notion that the Tremor will do the same. Otherwise, the 2025 Ford Explorer Tremor shares many of the outgoing Timberline’s unique exterior features, starting up front with an orange-accented grille, as well as orange tow hooks in the lower portion of the front fascia, where we can see a beefy skid plate as well.

Tremor Orange accents don the SUV’s unique wheels, which are the same size and design as the outgoing Timberline. They’re wrapped with Bridgetone Dueller A/T REVO3 265/65R18 tires, which are also sized the same as the ones present on the old Explorer Timberline. It’s the same story out back, with more orange accents, albeit, with a Tremor badge on the tailgate instead of a Timberline nameplate.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. Having only the one spoke pocket accented will look wonky going down the road, IMO

  3. Wow, a new trim of Explorer!!

This is way better than a new model!!

Let’s just throw an appearance package on a car that’s basically 5/6 years old at this point, and charge thousands for the pleasure having new stickers and paint accents!!

  5. This will be extremely disappointing if they do not offer the 3.0L as an option. The ST has proven very popular, and adding another trim with at least the option to upgrade to a more powerful engine would surely generate more interest.
