Access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network changed the game for EV owners, boosting the available pool of charging stations in the U.S. Vehicles, like Ford EVs, that feature Combined Charging Standard (CCS) must be fitted with North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters in order to take advantage of the Tesla chargers, however. The first Blue Oval vehicle to get an adapter was the Ford F-150 Lightning, as previously reported by Ford Authority. Now, owners of the electric pickup can take advantage of all-in-one bundle, featuring a mobile power cord and Fast Charging Adapter.
The bundle is available on all Ford F-150 Lightning models for $600. It includes a switchable cord end, which allows customers to charge functionally with either 120V or 240V, depending on application. It’s also packaged with an adapter to access DC Fast Charging stations that use the NACS adapter, allowing F-150 Lightning owners to charge at equipped Tesla stations.
It’s worth noting that both of the aforementioned pieces can be purchased as standalone options. The NACS adapter is offered for $200 by itself, while the charge cord kit runs $520 on its own. That means if a buyer purchases each item separately, they’re paying $720, so it’s a far better deal to opt for the Mobile Power Cord and Fast Charging Adapter bundle. However, note that the kit is sold exclusively for the Ford F-150 Lightning.
So far, the new Ford NACS adapter has performed well in real-world testing, and compares favorably to the similar Voltrex unit sold by Lectron. The part went through all manner of testing before it was brought to market, undergoing everything from rigorous drop testing to underwater conditions, being frozen, and even being run over in a drive-over trial. The adapter was designed to meet Ford’s strict standards and enable rapid production, ensuring quick availability for customers.
