The Ford Puma Gen-E debuted this past December as an all-electric version of the hot-selling ICE-powered Puma, and just entered full-scale production at the joint-venture Ford Otosan Craiova Assembly plant in Romania roughly one month ago. However, given the fact that the regular Puma crossover offers customers a sporty, performance-focused variant – the ST – many have wondered if The Blue Oval has something similar in the pipeline as it relates to the Ford Puma Gen-E – and, as it turns out, they do.
In a recent interview with Auto Express, Ford Europe Product Marketing Chief, Jan Herzog, admitted that the automaker has “a sportier version” of the Ford Puma Gen-E in the works, though he also added that “it’s definitely coming, if not on this model, but the model after” – meaning that it’s bit unclear when this more fun version of the EV crossover might actually go on sale.
In the very same interview, Herzog also stated that he “would love an ST or RS variant” of the company’s “EV models,” adding a bit more fuel to this particular fire. It’s unclear if the sportier version of the Ford Puma Gen-E will actually wear an ST or RS badge – which are reserved for performance-focused ICE models at the moment – but the executive is clearly passionate about keeping those particular monikers alive and perhaps even expanding them to additional models moving forward.
As for the existing Ford Puma Gen-E, it’s designed more to be an economical and efficient around-town EV than a sports car, with its single electric motor churning out 165 horsepower and propelling the crossover from 0-62 mph in around eight seconds. Its 43 kWH usable battery touts a solid WLTP-estimated 506 kilometer (314 mile) range in the city and 364 kilometers (226 miles) in mixed driving, however, and it can go from a 10-80 percent state of charge in around 23 minutes using DC fast charging.
