Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for charging ports with multiple flaps that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 27th, 2023, published on March 27th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0100402.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed quite a few patents pertaining specifically to EVs in recent years, and for good reason – it still believes that electric vehicles are the future, even though consumers haven’t quite gravitated toward them as quickly as previously expected. Of those patent filings, many revolve around different types of charge ports, and as companies continue to try and come up with some sort of universal standard, that continues to be the case. Now, this newly published piece of intellectual property arrives centered around an idea for charging ports with multiple flaps that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.
In this case, Ford is merely exploring an idea for a charging port flap(s) that can be configured so that it opens in various ways, and can also stay open in different positions. The idea behind this concept is rather simple – there are times when it could be difficult to plug in a charger depending on what type one is using, but at the same time, a flap is needed to provide protection from the elements. Thus, this is a simple way to address those concerns all at once, if this particular idea does wind up becoming a reality one day.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
