Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a biometric identification system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 27th, 2023, published on March 27th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0104469.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has published more than one patent revolving around the idea of implementing biometric technology into its vehicles as of late, potentially giving owners access to their vehicle without the need for a key or phone. That list includes ideas for a keyless entry keypad with a biometric system, as well as a biometric authorization system. Now, this newly published patent expands that list with a new idea for a biometric identification system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
In this case, Ford is proposing the use of a biometric system not to verify that a person is authorized to gain access to a vehicle, but rather, to detect security events based on biometric comparisons of people that are near or inside of the vehicle. A sensor would gather biometric information about a vehicle’s occupant, then look to see if that person has a criminal record, for example, which could prove useful for police, specifically. The idea here is to provide law enforcement with a quicker way to obtain information on a suspect, which could wind up preventing them from causing harm to an officer – if this patent does in fact one day become a reality.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
