Imported 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux Up For Auction

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a proper legend in the realm of The Blue Oval, a homologated machine that served largely one purpose – to enable FoMoCo to compete in the Group A World Rally Championship (WRC) world of motorsports, which it did between 1993-1998. The road-going version of that racing machine hung around for a number of years as well, and remains a very special car to this day – as well as a competent performer. Now, this imported 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth has surfaced for sale, giving someone in the U.S. the chance to own it.

This 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth is up for auction at Bring a Trailer with 124k kilometers (77k miles) on the clock after making its way to the U.S. via Finland and Canada. It’s one of around 7,000 units produced in total over the car’s entire run, and in this case, is finished in Zinc Yellow, with the rear hatch, quarter panels, and rocker panels having been repainted previously. A carbon-fiber lip spoiler and “hockey sticks” have been added to the mix, but all of the requisite factory goodies remain – including that giant rear spoiler and 18-inch OZ Racing wheels.

Inside the cabin, one will find plenty of amenities thanks to the presence of the Lux spec, including black leather seating with Recaro front buckets, a power sunroof, heated side mirrors, a heated windshield, power windows, carpeted door bins, and air conditioning, though an aftermarket head unit has been added, along with an amp and aftermarket speakers. Power comes from the turbocharged Cosworth 2.0L I-4 DOHC engine, which has been fitted with a Garrett “big turbo” and a Wolf Racing ECU and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

It isn’t too often we see a Ford Escort RS Cosworth surface for sale in the U.S., but there have been a couple in recent months – that list includes a 1995 model with 41k miles, as well as a 1992 Escort RS Cosworth once owned by Jeremy Clarkson.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
