The Jeep Wagoneer arrived on the scene a few years ago, taking the Ford Expedition head-on in the full-size SUV segment. The forthcoming Wagoneer has one trick up its sleeve that the Expedition doesn’t offer yet: an extended range electric vehicle (EREV) variant. Ford Authority spotted a Wagoneer EREV prototype out testing, giving us our first glimpse at the gasoline-assisted Expedition competitor.
The Jeep Wagoneer EREV features a plugin hybrid electric system seemingly lifted right from the Ram 1500 Ramcharger. The Wagoneer is tagged with the 4xe badge, which is joining the lineup for the first time. This model features a gasoline powered V6 that doesn’t provide power to the wheels, but helps provide more EV range by charging the battery. The SUV can also be plugged in to charge at home or at charging stations.
This particular prototype is wearing light camo, including a wrap affixed to its charging port, giving away the EREV system under the skin. In the case of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, that EREV system features a 92 kWh battery paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) drivetrain, delivering 647 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque. It’s not clear what the output will be for the Jeep Wagoneer EREV, but it will likely be similar to that of its upcoming Ramcharger counterpart.
This prototype is missing most of its front fascia, but its redesigned headlights and hood are on full display, giving a good look at the new designs. The rear end, too, is mostly naked, stripped of its fascia as well.
The Ford Expedition doesn’t offer an EREV variant – at least not yet. But Ford CEO Jim Farley says that The Blue Oval is working on developing the tech for its crossover, SUVs, and heavy-duty trucks. In fact, Ford will bolster its lineup with EREV and hybrid models in the future. At this time, it’s not clear what variant will wear the Expedition badge – an EREV, plug-in hybrid, or hybrid model – but some type of electrified variant is on the way, and a report from February 2025 stated that their debut is about two years away.
For its part, the 2025 Ford Expedition represented a complete redesign, stimulating interest in Ford’s full-size SUV offering as it lands at dealers. However, the Jeep Wagoneer has been slowly eating into the Expedition’s share of the pie, meaning that its forthcoming EREV variant could very well dethrone Ford’s offering once it hits dealers.

PHEVs are almost in the same category as EVs – not wanted by most. Automaker stupidity just rolls on.
Go to your safe space. I personally am tired of the automobile and wish we could go back the the green solution of horse and buggy.
Those Bumpers look Awesome!!! LOL
I think it’s so funny how they add things like “Ford expedition rival” to make Jeep relevant for a Ford news website.
Finally, some good news for Ford Motor Company, this vehicle will pose no threat to the Ford Expeditions since most of Stellantis hybrid vehicles (Dodge Hornet, Jeep 4xe) have been very unreliable so far
