Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Model E” with the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) in Mexico, Ford Authority has learned. The application was filed on March 14th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0119853337525. The filing carries the goods and services category of “automobiles.”
The Ford Authority Take
Back in March 2022, Ford Motor Company announced that it would be splitting itself into three distinct business units, at least, in the U.S. – Ford Blue, which is focused on pure ICE models in the retail side of things, Ford Pro, a unit dedicated to commercial fleet customers and products, and Model e, which is centered around all-electric vehicles. With this new trademark filing, one could assume that Ford is now thinking about following suit in Mexico, or perhaps it has a different use in mind for the Model e name, specifically.
For example, Ford could opt to use Model e as a way to brand its EVs in Mexico, too. To date, it has done essentially that in different parts of the world, and it uses “E” in a number of all-electric model names in Europe – a list that includes the E-Transit lineup, and the Puma Gen-E, for example. In fact, the Ford Puma Gen-E, E-Tourneo Courier, and E‑Transit Courier just entered full-scale production at the joint-venture Ford Otosan Craiova Assembly plant in Romania last month, filling out that region’s EV lineup as a whole.
This Model e filing is just the latest trademark we’ve seen surface from Ford at the IMPI in recent memory, too. Back in November 2024, the automaker filed to trademark “Thunderbird” in that country – which it has done in the U.S. on multiple occasions – which could mean that the iconic T-Bird is set to make a comeback at some point. Last November, we also spotted a trademark filing for “Lightning” in Mexico, meaning that the Ford F-150 Lightning could also soon be sold in that market.
